Soil lead (Pb) and urban grown lettuce: Sources, processes, and implications for gardener best management practices

چکیده

Urban community gardeners employ a range of best practices that limit crop contamination by toxicants like lead (Pb). While Pb root uptake is generally low, the relative significance various deposition processes and effectiveness in reducing these have not been sufficiently characterized. This study compared leafy lettuce (Lactuca sativa) grown high (1150 mg/kg) low (90 soils, under three different soil cover conditions: 1) bare soil, 2) mulch to splash, 3) hoophouses splash air deposition, New York City (NYC) garden rural site Ithaca, (NY). The lettuces were further greenhouse (Ithaca) supermarket samples. Atmospheric was monitored passive trap collection through funnel samplers. Results show atmospheric accounted for 84 78% NYC respectively. In 88 93% on lettuces, with being dominant mechanism. Soil covers shown be effective at significantly (p < 0.05) contamination, mulching strongly recommended as practice.

Urban Sprawl Pattern and Its Implications for Urban Management (Case Study: Zaria Urban Area, Nigeria)

Urban sprawl, or the unplanned and uncontrolled spreading out of built-up areas in Zaria urban area causes problems of congestion, poor urban basic infrastructure delivery and poor urban planning. This paper analyzed the pattern and implications of urban sprawl using GIS and Remote sensing as an improved approach to analyze and explain sprawling beyond the traditional spatial or cartographic ma...

Accumulation of Lead and Arsenic by Lettuce Grown on Lead-arsenate Contaminated Orchard Soils

s: Lead-arsenate was used to control codling moth (Cydia pomonella) in apple (Malus sylvestris Mill) orchards from the 1900’s to the1960’s. Lead and arsenic are generally immobile and remain in the surface soil. Some orchard lands are being used for vegetable crop production. There are concerns of lead and arsenic accumulation in vegetables crops grown in these soils. Objectives were to 1) dete...

Best management practices in counting urban black bears

DNA-based capture-mark-recapture (CMR) techniques are commonly used to obtain population parameters of black bears (Ursus americanus) in rural and wildland landscapes; however, these techniques have not been implemented in urban clusters (i.e., 2,500 to 50,000 residents). Black bears can readily habituate to urban clusters, and wildlife managers need to monitor and manage these urban bear popul...

Concentrations of lead, cadmium and barium in urban garden-grown vegetables: the impact of soil variables.

Paired vegetable/soil samples from New York City and Buffalo, NY, gardens were analyzed for lead (Pb), cadmium (Cd) and barium (Ba). Vegetable aluminum (Al) was measured to assess soil adherence. Soil and vegetable metal concentrations did not correlate; vegetable concentrations varied by crop type. Pb was below health-based guidance values (EU standards) in virtually all fruits. 47% of root cr...
